I have been told that 2 ancesters of mind were Colliery Managers in Yorkshire around 1925 to 1930. There names were William Forster Spedding and Fred Burns Spedding. I am trying to build up a picture of these guys and would appreciate any infomation or advice of how to proceed with my research.

I started browsing the internet, seeking an answer to a question which had been put to me, of why some collieries were called Main and others weren't. I stumbled across this website in my search. The site is an absolute gem, and I can't commend it enough.

My personal interest in collieries is that my Father, George Charles Norcliffe, worked in the mining industry as a Pit Deputy, at the Rotherham Canklow pit as I grew up in the 40's, moving to finish his working life at Cadeby Main through the 50's until he was forced to retire after a series of heart attacks in the early 60's. He served in the mines rescue service through those times and I still have his medal and bars. We moved to Conisborough 'concrete canyon' when Canklow closed down and from where I started my career in the Electricity Supply Industry at Mexborough Power Station in 1959, with both Denaby and Cadeby supplying coal to the Station. The photographic records posted on the site are priceless, deserving of an exhibition in their own right. The one depicting the confrontation between a policeman and a miner in a fake policeman's helmet is street photography at its best. I will look to see if I have any photographs in my own archives that may be of interest, and I will make a contribution to the site.

Best Wishes - Ray Norcliife

This is a brilliant, brilliant website. I'm from a family of miners although I'm one of the younger generations who lived in a mining village but never got to see the coal mines or experience the community spirit of those days. Funnily enough I now work in a coal mine in Cnetral Queensland, Australia - they do say you go back to your roots!

TO sean carney

Will have a go at contacting those two prople who you suggested. You say you might have known my family, sorry but for me the names don't help me much as I was just four when my parent emmigrated to Australia, but if you could give me any more information I would be very happy to hear from you (if you use my email address it is more direct as I do not necessarily check this sight too often, but whilst I am in the UK I am regularly checking my emails

Eli Purser was also my granfatherBarry Holland]
My grand dad was also Eli Purser and after reading an article in the Hucknall Dispatch newspaper regarding the Edward Medal I decided to find out more about him.
Barry, if you would like to get in touch I will let you know where I have got to with the Purser history

My grandfather, Eli Purser, was awarded the Edward Medal for his bravery durting a mining accident at Askern Main Colliery in May 1917. It was very interesting to see the pictures of the pit. Great site.

Dear Sir

I write to tell you of the sad loss of my father Derek Stephenson whom as I am sure you will be aware was a colliery manager at Yorkshire main for a number of years.

Derek passed away on Friday 23rd October 09 after going into hospital with an infection and suffering further complications.

Derek was born 09 09 1929 and had just celebrated his 80th Birthday.

Can I take this opportunity to thank you for your web site as an ex miner from Y/M I have spent my entire Sunday morning to date scrolling through the various postings.

Regards

David Stephenson

Hi everyone,

I am currently working on a photography project on the strike of '84, focusing on miners, their wives and union officials in the West Yorkshire area. If anyone is interested in being part of this series or has any photos/stories they would like to share I would be really grateful.

My email is: gretaimages@googlemail.com
